Government Northern Colonies
English colonists settled in Mass for separation from the government and church.
## Made government theocracy based on the teaching of the bible.
In Rhode Island made government that was fair equitable religion played no role.
Settlers banished moved west, south made Rhode Island.
Broke law must convert religion or banished.
Only some benefited if agreed with church.
Rhode Island Charter became ideal for constitution.
Rhode Island promised to uphold the religion and personal freedom.
Attracted Jewish people and Quakers.
Rhode Island’s motto became “Hope”
The people were not settled in Rhode Island called “a sink” and “latrine” (toilet).
Middle Colonies
New Netherslands, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware had different governing structure.
Some people chartered from the king of their mother country.
New Netherlands chartered Dutch West India co. trading.
DWI sent government to oversee the colony.
To attract more people DWI tried sub-governing.
If attract 50 people the DWI would give they a large piece of land.
This was not successful because there was free or inexpensive land.
So people did not have to be a servant to come to America.
England took the ownership of the New Netherland King Charles 1 gave the land to the Duke of New Netherlands his younger brother James.
Duke selected governor.
Citizens selected assembly.
The governor still had to appoint the assembly before it could become law.
New Jersey which was originally part of New York was under ownership of two different proprietors until the early 1700’s
West Jersey was owned by two Quakers
East Jersey also had a proprietorship.
Delaware and Pennsylvania were under the proprietorship of William Penn
Penn wanted to make a government that was responsive to the needs of people.
He made a two tiered legislature
Council aided the governor.
1701 gave Delaware the power to have its own assembly.

Founded in 1620
· Fished along the coast and trapped beavers and cut down trees to build ships · Puritans wanted to purify the church in England · They got off course and landed in Plymouth in November 1620 · 1620 the pilgrims boarded the Mayflower · 1639 Thomas hooker wrote his ideas of religious freedom · In spring Squanto taught them how to grow crops · In fall 1621 they had Thanksgiving

1624 the Dutch west India company sent 18 families to settle what is now Albany, NY
Virginia
1. Virginia was founded 1607
2. The first permanent settlement was founded at Jamestown, Virginia
3. Starvation and Disease killed most of the original settlers
